Personally, I prefer 02 over 98 but either are really good start points (and where I started myself on an old MAME emulator :D ) XI is a lot of fun, and it's the last of the games to include my favourite characters so I play it quite a bit still.
If you're looking to start off, try any of 98, 02, XI or XIII. The Saturn requires the same 1MB RAM cartridge utilized by the previous game. It was ported to the Neo-Geo CD, as well as the PlayStation and the Sega Saturn in Japan only. It is the fourth game in The King of Fighters series. Just realize that they don't use that system any more, so I wouldn't start there. The King of Fighters ’97 is a 1997 fighting game produced by SNK for the Neo Geo arcade and home console. If you wanna give them a go, they're a lot of fun too.

A lot of people seem to say that XIII is basically them taking XII and fixing all that was wrong with it, and I agree.ĩ9,00, and 01 are a bit different than the rest of the series in that it uses 4v4, with one of your teammates acting as an assist character a la Marvel vs Capcom. Purged many of the characters and the fighting system seemed really slow and sluggish compared to the rest of the series.
XI and XIII are superb as well, but avoid XII like the plague. The series really didn't begin to shine until 96 though. If you've played Tekken, think of it like Tekken Tag where it throws all the characters into one game regardless of the previous plot. Both of them are "Dream Matches", which means it includes all the characters from the previous games compiled into one. are widely considered two of the better games. The KoF series stopped using year designations after 2003, then went XI,XII,XIII (which is the newest). There's no such game, so it must be a hack. KoF is actually my favourite fighting series, so I'm happy to chime in.
